The most unsettling part is that freedom rarely disappears because millions of people suddenly choose tyranny.

It fades because ordinary people become too distracted, too exhausted, or too polarized to notice the small compromises accumulating around them.

History isn't only shaped by dramatic acts of courage.

It's also shaped by quiet habits:

questioning your own side,

protecting principles over personalities,

and refusing to outsource your thinking.

A free society ultimately depends on citizens who are willing to be intellectually honest even when it's inconvenient. That's a much harder discipline than simply picking a side.

Epictetus reminds us that freedom is sustained not by opinion alone, but by responsibility and virtue. Stoicism teaches that seeking truth requires the courage to examine ourselves first, to act with integrity, and to stand up for political integrity wherever it is threatened. A healthy democracy depends not only on our rights, but on citizens willing to think critically, speak honestly, and serve the common good. Virtue is not passive, it is lived🕷️
