Needed this. It reminded me of how I survived a lot of hardships so far. If I could survive those hard times from before, I can learn to face whatever comes next.
“Expecting life to be easy is the source of most of our suffering. Not the events themselves, but our belief that they shouldn't be happening.” - great reminder!
This article could be great to be included in high school/secondary school curriculum. Helping younger people to develop their resilience is a big theme that we need to think about.
It’s part of being alive and being human, thank you for this! Reminds me of when I started playing tennis in college and I was told I would not play higher then the last spot, 6. That I was too weak! Something in me awoke and I trained harder then I ever had before, played more, trained more even when I felt I couldn’t. I came back the following year beating every girl on my team and became the #1 player for the rest of my three years. We are truly so much stronger then we think! Sometimes it simply takes the power of belief in yourself and something to stir your soul.
Highly inspiring write-up about being ready to face all types of hardships that confront one during the journey of this wonderful life. Being prepared for all eventualities is the best thing one can do to lead a contented life.
This is also a foundational teaching of Buddhism, that life is suffering. It can sound bleak at first, but if you expect struggle to be part of life, you see those times of good health or good fortune as glorious exceptions, but not the rule.
Christianity, unfortunately, tends to teach that misfortune and suffering are the result of sin, and can be prevented by living a sin-free life, or praying them away.
Since I was child I was told by my parents to pray to god that I will have strength to face any difficulties or challenges that the life throws at me. This thinking has very deeply influenced my life and the way how I see difficulties and challenges.
When the flood comes, be the man who built an ark.

You can only accept what happens as it comes.
But yes, I would say that learning to understand that sufferings must happen is a sign of maturity.
Acceptance as things unfold is probably more accurate. And yes, that understanding definitely comes with maturity.
